Black orchids

Black orchids are, in essence, a myth. No true black orchid has ever been found. Indeed, there are plenty of orchids that are so dark they practically deserve the label “black orchid,” but even then they are still merely an ultra dark purple or burgundy. The flowers that generally get labeled as “black orchids” are the ones with extremely dark lips, bars, or petals.

One type of orchid that the name “black orchid” is often applied to is the cymbidium canaliculatun var sparkesii – this one is actually a dark maroon. There are many others, though, that have acquired the famous and elusive name of “black orchid.” There are many myths and stories that revolve around black orchids, and while they are not true and while true black orchids do not exist, it can still be fun and exciting to search for them!
