Home > Learning Center > FAQ: Black orchid

Q: Is there really such thing as a “black orchid?”

A: This question is certainly very debatable. There are certain plenty of orchids out there that people refer to as black orchids, but not all of these are technically black. In fact, more often than not, they are a deep dark purple or a deep dark burgundy. But in certain type of light, they do, indeed, look black. People generally call an orchid a black orchid if it has black lips, black bars, or black petals on them. Again, these parts generally are not actually black, but they are extremely dark. With all of the hybridized orchids that are showing up, though, it is reasonable to assume that eventually someone will come up with a true black orchid.
